Guiding your journey to study abroad in New Zealand

December in New Zealand is the perfect time to explore, recharge and make memories. To help you make the most of it, we asked alumni for their tips and learnings, and here’s what they had to say.

1) Embrace the Kiwi summer

Recharge your batteries

After a big year, December is the perfect time to slow down, focus on yourself and enjoy the Kiwi summer. Kinnah, a Filipino alumna who has called Aotearoa home for nearly three years, shares:

“New Zealand taught me that people here don’t just work hard—they value life. Long walks, calm weekends… they’ve shown me that productivity means more when you take care of your wellbeing.”
Kinah, Master’s in International Contemporary Studies from Philippines.

Hit the beaches

New Zealand is surrounded by beautiful beaches, perfect for swimming, picnics, or trying something new like kayaking or paddleboarding. Many beaches host summer events like volleyball tournaments, community snorkelling days and even pop-up water parks, check local council or student association event calendars. You can find a list of some of New Zealand’s top beaches here.

Explore nature walks

New Zealand has amazing nature walks and day hikes. One of the most recommended activities from our alumni was to walk Mount Maunganui — a favourite walk with stunning views.

If you’re keen to venture further, consider exploring one of the eleven Great Walks of New Zealand. The best thing? No deadly animals, no snakes and no crocodiles. You can enjoy all the hikes without having to worry about dangerous animals.

Try an adventure activity

If you’re feeling bold, you can find a lot of activities across the country, bungee jumping, jet‑boating, rock-climbing and skydiving are popular, especially in summer conditions.

One of the most tips shared from our alumni is to do group activities to keep costs down— and don’t forget to use your student ID for discounts! You can also check student deals on StudentCard, UniDays, and your university’s student association for extra savings on activities, food, and transport.

2) Holiday like a local

Celebrate the festive season in kiwi‑style.

Christmas here means BBQs and beach picnics. If it’s your first time away from home, find local traditions you enjoy, like parades, carols, markets or go check out the beautiful Pōhutukawa trees (New Zealand Christmas tree) in full bloom.

Make it social

A nice suggestion from our alumni, is to host a potluck on Christmas Eve—each person can bring a dish from their home country. Best way to beat homesickness and share cultures.

Manodya, Secretary of the Sri Lankan Students’ Association from Sri Lanka, shares:

“New Zealand taught me that community is everywhere if you’re willing to build it.”

Learn and use te reo Māori greetings

Learn a few te reo Māori greetings like: “Meri Kirihimete” (Merry Christmas), “kia ora” (hello). It’s a simple, respectful way to connect with community.

3) Smart student hacks

  • Book buses and ferries early, especially before public holidays (Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve).
  • Many places offer student discounts, remember to always carry your student ID.
  • Farmers’ markets are perfect for fresh seasonal produce—berries, local cheeses, and picnic supplies.
  • New Zealand’s UV levels can be high. Follow Slip, Slop, Slap (cover up, apply SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear a hat), and bring water on hikes. Weather can change quickly—pack a light layer even on hot days.
  • Volunteer at local events or pick up extra hours (within your visa allowances). It’s great for meeting people and boosting your CV. Most international students can work up to 25 hours a week during study periods and full-time during the holidays—just make sure to check your visa conditions first.

💡 Alumni tip: Plan one “big” event and mix it with free options like markets, light trails, or pop-up festivals.

Wrap‑up

December in New Zealand is made for students: sun‑filled days, welcoming communities, and endless ways to explore on a budget. Whether you’re savouring a beach BBQ, catching a festival, or ticking off a bucket‑list hike, you’ll find that summer here is more than a season—it’s a feeling.

Ready to plan your month?

  • Pick 1–2 big adventures (Great Walk, kayaking, day trip).
  • Add 3–4 free local activities (markets, light trails, local beaches).
  • Lock in transport early and pack sun protection.

✨ And remember - recharge your batteries!
