Xiaosha's Journey of Growth, Learning, and Belonging: How Studying in New Zealand Nourished Me Professionally and Personally
When Xiaosha made the decision to study in New Zealand, she knew she was taking a step that would define a future.
She came to pursue Psychology at the University of Waikato where she completed an academic journey that included undergraduate study, a Postgraduate Diploma, a Master’s degree, and intern psychologist training. Now a qualified psychology professional, Xiaosha reflects on her time as an international student in New Zealand – a period that helped her grow in confidence, cultural awareness, and career readiness.
A World-Class Academic Environment
New Zealand is globally recognised for offering high-quality education that blends academic excellence with real-world application. This combination is exactly what drew Xiaosha to the University of Waikato.
I was drawn to the University of Waikato because of its strong academic standing and the practical, hands-on nature of their curriculum
For Xiaosha, the decision to study in New Zealand was guided by her passion for psychology and her desire for an inclusive, supportive learning environment that values both theory and practical experience.

Each step of her academic journey – from undergraduate study to postgraduate qualifications and training – added layers of expertise and prepared her to contribute meaningfully to the field of psychology.
New Zealand’s Unique Learning Style
A defining feature of Xiaosha’s experience was the classroom environment. “My learning experience in New Zealand was incredibly collaborative, practical, and reflective,” she says.
At the University of Waikato, she found a welcoming and supportive academic community. Lecturers were approachable, and peer learning was highly encouraged — an environment that helped her develop teamwork skills essential for professional settings.
I appreciated how our lecturers were stayed supportive outside class - they were always approachable, whether I needed academic feedback or career guidance
Xiaosha was especially inspired by New Zealand’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, with a deeper respect for culturally diverse communities. She invested her personal time in learning about Indigenous knowledge systems, such as Mātauranga Māori, to enrich herself both personally and professionally.
Career Outcomes and Real-World Skills
One of the most compelling reasons why students choose to study in New Zealand is its strong focus on employability. During Xiaosha’s intern psychologist training at the University of Waikato, she worked directly with individuals with autism and developmental disabilities applying evidence-based intervention strategies in real-world environments.
My education in New Zealand and my time at the University of Waikato has given me a strong foundation for my professional journey in psychology and behavioural support.
Another key moment was learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document) during a professional workshop, which deepened Xiaosha’s understanding of cultural partnership and the importance of integrating tikanga (customs) in clinical settings.
Xiaosha’s academic training empowered her to work across multidisciplinary teams and confidently provide compassionate, culturally competent support to individuals and families from all walks of life. “I learned the value of inclusivity and person-centred practice – something I apply every day in my work with clients and their families,” she shares.
Empowered for Personal Growth
What truly sets a New Zealand education apart is its emphasis on personal growth. Xiaosha notes that learning extended well beyond the classroom.
Xiaosha notes that learning extended well beyond the classroom. From managing multiple commitments to navigating a new culture, her experience as an international student in New Zealand built her confidence and shaped her worldview.
Living and studying abroad also made me more independent and adaptable… I became more reflective, resilient, and culturally aware.
New Zealand offered a balanced lifestyle with a unique blend of nature-filled and community-oriented environment that is safe and welcoming, which made Xiaosha's transition to life in New Zealand easier.
“New Zealand’s lifestyle isn't rushed – it truly values your well-being in everyday life, in classrooms and in the workplace,” she shares. Even during intense academic periods, Xiaosha found time to enjoy the outdoors — from peaceful walks around Hamilton Lake to exploring Raglan Beach and Rotorua.
Xiaosha hiked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, wandered through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, and visited the iconic Hobbiton movie set — all while learning about Māori traditions, storytelling, and astronomy.
Volunteering at a local disability support organisation added another layer of connection, giving her the opportunity to give back and grow through service. “I appreciate the sense of community and how friendly and respectful New Zealanders are,” she says. These experiences outside of class have not only created lasting memories but also deepening her appreciation for New Zealand.
Xiaosha's experience is a powerful example of why studying and living in New Zealand is more than just an academic choice, it's a transformative life experience that nurtures academic professional and personal development.
