Luckily, New Zealand’s education system is built around encouraging students to develop their confidence and independent thinking. Students who have travelled from all around the world to study in New Zealand have all reported enjoying this change of pace, compared to education in their home countries.

I’ve learned to be independent; I know I can look after myself. Plus I understand many different cultures because I have studied with students from all over the world … I am more confident about making my own decisions about my future.

- Bai Yok from Thailand, who did a student exchange at a high school in Dunedin

Whenever you feel the need, you can reach out to your education provider and ask to be connected with these resources.

A New Zealand education will encourage you to explore wider life experiences and different cultures.

New Zealand is a very diverse country. When you first arrive, you can expect to see people from many different ethnic backgrounds living, working and studying side by side. This can mean that you may meet people from cultures you are unfamiliar and curious about.

Māori culture is important to life and education in New Zealand. Here school students are performing a haka.

For example, New Zealand’s indigenous Māori culture is very prominent in education providers across the country. You’ll likely see terms and phrases in the Māori language (known as ‘Te Reo Māori), as well as Māori design and culture reflected in literature and architecture on campus.

I had heard a lot about New Zealand politics and the Māori culture, and I wanted to learn more about that and I could also take engineering courses during my Study Abroad. I have so many highlights and I've enjoyed my entire time there, but I feel like the biggest thing I would say is the culture, the environment, and the people.

- Donna Ly, studied at the University of Auckland

For many Study Abroad students, New Zealand’s teachers have been a particular highlight of their time here. Compared to teachers in their home countries, students have appreciated the tactics and mentality that New Zealand teachers bring to the classroom.  Filipino student Carlos Solomon Jr who is completing a Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, Social and Community Services (Level 4) here in New Zealand, comments on the unique learning styles of this course.

I go to lectures every day and it’s really collaborative. We are encouraged to ask questions in class and have discussions with our tutors and classmates. We also do group scenarios. What we learn is what the possible outcomes are, and what actions we can apply when we’re doing our practicum or in the workplace. What you achieve is hands-on experience.
