Studying for an international qualification in hotel management in New Zealand has led Deepak Nair to a management career in the country’s booming hospitality industry.

Deepak, from Kerala in India, studied for a Graduate Diploma in Hotel Management at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in Rotorua.

The institution’s Employability Centre arranged for Deepak to have a part-time job at the four-star Distinction Hotel Rotorua during his studies. After graduating, Deepak was originally offered a job as housekeeping supervisor at the Distinction hotel on the shores of beautiful Lake Te Anau in Fiordland.

Since he graduated, Deepak has been promoted through various management level positions, and he now works with the MCK hotel group as a Duty Manager at Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau.

“Toi Ohomai was a memorable experience,” says Deepak.

"I was able to interact with students who represent different countries, cultures and customs, make good friends and interact with staff as I grew skills for my career."

Toi Ohomai gave me an idea of how to work in New Zealand. It helped shape my personality and interaction with employers.
